Laser and Light Treatments

Are we the only Derms who sort of feel like superheroes when we get to say... hmmm.. let’s use the LASER... Lasers (an acronym which stands for light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation) have TONS of applications in dermatology, including removal of vascular lesions, birthmarks, pigmented lesions, wrinkles, tattoos, scars, and hair, and in treatment of psoriasis, cancer, or signs of aging. Lasers are basically devices that are monochromatic and utilize a single wavelength of light to target various things in the skin that absorb different wavelengths. The correct choice of laser device and laser settings depends on what is being treated. Always see a board certified dermatologist for laser procedures in order to prevent complications and never go to a laser treatment after having sun exposure!

Different from lasers, broad band light (BBL) devices and intense pulsed light (IPL) devices utilize various wavelengths in the visible light spectrum to treat skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, redness, sun spots, or aging with little downtime. These devices are less targeted than lasers but also easily tolerated.

Not sure what treatments would be best for you? A cosmetic consultation can help! During a consultation, your doctor will establish a treatment plan based on your goals and budget.
